How to waterproof your gear?

How to make my gear waterproof?

To make your clothes and equipment water resistant you can apply various spray-on, wash-in, or rub-on coatings. It's possible to use the chosen stuff on new items or re-proof the pre-worn ones. Pay attention to the manufacturer’s application instructions. Choose the remedy keeping in mind you will use it on natural or synthetic fabrics.

What can be waterproofed with wax?

Waxing is the way people waterproofed fabric for outdoor use many years ago. Now modern technologies let us use special products for different needs. Also people use special wax for wooden items, for footwear.  As for fabrics, manufacturers say, there are special types of wax for fabrics that are pure cotton or cotton-blend and there are for fabrics with less than 50% of cotton fibre.

What kind of wax can I use for waterproofing?

Our shop offers two types of wax for fabric. Solid Wax in a Bar “Siberian Wax” (100 g) for predominantly synthetic fibre (50% or more in the composition). It is suitable for Fjallraven G-1000 fabric.

Ultrasoft Wax In A Jar “Siberian Wax” (250 g) for cotton fabric. Its formula prevents creases and leaves the fabric as soft as it was before waxing. This wax is fully suitable with waxed clothing from Barbour and Belstaff brands.

How to apply wax to the fabric?

Pay attention to the manufacturer’s application instructions. But mostly they all have similar recommendations: clean the surface, apply wax to, heat the fabric and let it hang on a rack for a day.

What clothes can I waterproof with wax?

Waxing was invented for preventing outerwear from soaking in the rain. So you can use wax for waterproofing or reproofing your suits, trousers, jackets, bags, racksaks, tablecloths and curtains for your garden house.

Can I wax polyester tents and clothes?

Well, it’s up to you. Waxing can easily cover polyester fabric. But wax hardly sinks into synthetic fabric, it just coats it. Soon your polyester trousers or tent will get crackles which will let water through. So if you are not going to rub and fold this item every day, waxing may help. But it’s better to use special sprays for waterproofing synthetic fabric that can help you solve the problem.

What changes happens with clothing after waxing?

Waxing makes your gear windproof and water resistant. At the same time it makes your clothing less breathable and it also darkens in color. That's great for outerwear, backpacks, or anything similar, but not so good for things you want to wash often.
